Quite extraordinary a report on this March 8, 2010, Morning Edition news program of NPR News. In it, journalists and analysts voiced a comparative analysis between Haiti and Chile following the recent earthquakes that shook both countries within less than a two-month span. Haiti is presented as it is: a nation with very little structural capacity largely due to its dysfunctional government system. Chile on the other hand is presented as a nation ready and prepared for such catastrophe.
Although Chile is located geographically in a region prone to earthquake, it is nonetheless important to realize how poorly Haiti is organized. Even the initial reactions of the elected government to the earthquake was criticized for its slowness. This is a fascinating news analysis to listen to, and perhaps to draw some lessons from.
